The sand speaks first. It shivers under the UTV’s tires, a soft hiss rising as the machine noses into the open desert north of Kanab. The wind lifts tiny banners off the dune crests, daring you onward as red cliffs gather on the horizon. Your guide eases the throttle and the engine answers, a steady heartbeat, and the day widens into possibility. This is how you earn a quiet slot canyon in Southern Utah—by letting the sand have its say, by following a path that shifts with every breeze.

Trail Wisdom

Footwear Matters on Sand

Wear closed-toe hiking shoes with decent tread—soft sand and a short ladder are part of the experience.

Hydrate Before You Ride

Drink water before departure and carry at least 1 liter per person; desert air dries you out fast even on short outings.

Protect from the High Sun

A brimmed hat, sunglasses, and reef-safe sunscreen keep the reflected light from the sandstone in check.

Secure Your Gear

Bring a small daypack; sand and slot canyons are unforgiving to loose phones and dangling camera straps.

Local Knowledge

Hidden Gems

  • Coral Pink Sand Dunes State Park for sunset color and easy dune play
  • Moqui Cave museum for a quick hit of local geology and movie-town history

Wildlife

Desert cottontail, Raven

Conservation Note

Stay on established sand tracks and avoid stepping on dark biological soil crusts; these living communities prevent erosion and can take decades to recover.

Kanab earned the nickname "Little Hollywood" after more than 100 films and TV shows were shot in the area’s red rock landscapes.

Seasonal Guide

spring

Best for: Mild temperatures, Bright, even canyon light

Challenges: Wind-driven sand, Occasional spring storms

Spring brings comfortable temps and vibrant color in the sandstone. Expect breezes that can kick up fine sand during the ride.

summer

Best for: Early morning tours, Consistent light in the slot

Challenges: High heat, Monsoon thunderstorms in July–August

Start early to beat heat and storms. Midday inside the slot can still be comfortable thanks to shade and airflow.

fall

Best for: Stable weather, Warm days and cool evenings

Challenges: Shortening daylight, Popular travel season

Autumn is prime for clear skies and crisp air—ideal for photography and family trips with predictable conditions.

winter

Best for: Low crowds, Soft, angled light

Challenges: Cold mornings, Potential icy patches

Dress in layers; the slot can be chilly. Occasional snow dusts the dunes, adding contrast and texture to photos.

Photographer's Notes

Bring a wide-angle (16–35mm full-frame equivalent) to embrace the slot’s curves, and consider bracketing exposures to manage contrast. A small microfiber cloth is invaluable for blowing sand. Midday light bounces warmly off the walls—shoot RAW, expose for highlights, and look for reflected glows around corners. Avoid strong polarizers inside slots; they can create uneven sky tones overhead.

What to Bring

Closed-Toe Hiking ShoesEssential

Camera with Wide-Angle Lens

Captures the sweeping curves and tight walls that define the slot’s character.

Common Questions

Do guests drive the UTVs?

No. This is a fully guided experience—your guide does all the driving through the deep sand and backroads.

How difficult is the hike inside the slot canyon?

The hike is easy to moderate with mostly sandy footing and one short ladder. Most reasonably active visitors, including kids, do well.

Is sandboarding included?

Yes. Sandboarding at small dunes along the route is an optional, no-cost add-on for anyone who wants to try it.

Are permits required?

When you go with an authorized outfitter, permits are handled for you. Independent self-drives may face challenging sand conditions and are not recommended without high-clearance 4WD and experience.

What should we wear and bring?

Wear closed-toe shoes and sun protection. Bring at least 1 liter of water per person, a small daypack, and a camera. Dress in layers during cooler months.

Are restrooms available?

There are no restrooms at the canyon. Use facilities in Kanab before departure and follow Leave No Trace practices.

What to Pack

Closed-toe hiking shoes for traction on sand and the ladder; 1–2 liters of water per person to stay ahead of desert dehydration; brimmed hat and sunscreen to manage reflective light; small daypack to secure phones and cameras during the ride.
